2016 Whispering Angel, Sacha Lichine, Caves d’Esclans, Côtes de Provence, France
The world’s most famous rosé has an unenviable task each year – to raise its own bar in order to continue to impress all of the people who have fallen for Whispering Angel’s charms over the last decade.
2016 was a challenging vintage. It started off according to plan with an even flowering and fast early growth but a grim summer threatened to spoil everything. The vineyards used for this elite rosé are set in and around the heart of La Motte de Provence. Thankfully they are privy to cooling sea breezes and this phenomenon helped ameliorate the mid-morning summer heat. The resulting harvest of Grenache, Rolle and Cinsault, which took place throughout September, was near perfect. As always the trick with Whispering Angel is winemaker Patrick Léon and his son Bertrand’s incredible optical sorting disciplines and exceptional temperature control systems. The results are truly staggering.
The colour is the palest coral pink. The texture is fast-becoming a d’Esclans hallmark – gossamer silk with magical slipperiness offset with tangy, citrus pink grapefruit notes and cool, river-stone minerality. This is a perfect Whispering Angel and it will appeal from the moment it is poured into your glass until the last sunset next summer. 18/20 (now-2017)
